Pregnancy and Postpartum Care

About 60% of pregnant women experience low back pain during pregnancy.  But because medicine is often considered unsafe during pregnancy, many women suffer through their pains.  However, another part of of the population turn to chiropractic for the safe and effective relief of their condition.

Changes in weight distribution and ligament laxity often cause the misalignment of the body and overuse injury to the soft tissues.  Chiropractic adjustments and other soft tissue therapies are very helpful in resolving and managing these problems.  Swelling may also be an issue that can also be helped with lymphatic massage.

Scientific research studies support the use of chiropractic for low back pain in pregnancy.  Analysis of retrospective studies on the use of chiropractic spinal manipulation for low back pain during pregnancy in the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health, Jan-Feb, 2006, show that of the seventeen cases accepted in the study, 94% demonstrated clinically important improvement.  The overall group experienced a reduction of pain on average from a 5.9 out of 10 to a 1.5 out of 10.  The average time of relief was 4.5 days after an average of 1.8 number of visits.  No adverse effects were reported in any of the 17 cases.  The results suggest that chiropractic treatment was safe in these cases and that it may be effective for reducing low back pain in pregnancy.
